The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade Ivan E. Armstrong (ASN: 37603757), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 68th Tank Battalion, 6th Armored Division, in the vicinity of Tentling, France, on 4 December 1944. As a tank driver engaged in an attack against a strongly defended enemy position, his tank received a direct hit from an 88-mm. gun which killed the leader and wounded the platoon leader. With complete disregard for personal safety, he evacuated the wounded officer and administered first aid to him. Not knowing that the leader was killed, he again exposed himself to heavy fire to evacuate the lifeless body from the tank. His outstanding courage, grim determination and coolness reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces.
