The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Herbert C. Asmussen (ASN: 33178909), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 68th Tank Battalion, 6th Armored Division, in the vicinity of Arlencourt, Belgium, on 2 January 1945. When his company was engaged in an attack against the town, he volunteered to go forward to a ridge to get observation for protection for the flank. In the face of heavy enemy fire he advanced to the ridge and remained there despite the intense fire until the threat had passed. His courage, coolness and aggressiveness reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces.
