The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Louis J. Capozi (ASN: 32314986), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 68th Tank Battalion, 6th Armored Division, in the vicinity of Ploueaut, France, on 6 August 1944. With complete disregard for his own life when his Platoon Leader’s tank was hit by direct fire during a combined infantry and tank attack, he maneuvered his tank to cover the dismounted withdrawal of the crew from the disabled tank. Due to fierce opposition the remainder of the task force were forced to withdraw but he continued to cover the withdrawal with the result that he was mortally wounded and his crew was captured. His outstanding gallantry, coolness, great leadership, and utter disregard for his personal safety are worthy of the highest tribute and reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces.
