The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Raymond J. Flynn (ASN: 33157808), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 68th Tank Battalion, 6th Armored Division, in the vicinity of Arloncourt, Belgium, on 2 January 1945. When his company was engaged in the attack on the town of Arloncourt, its flank was exposed to a ridge which made observation impossible. He volunteered to go forward to the ridge and observe and remain in observation to give warning of any approach of enemy units. Despite heavy enemy fire, he remained at this observation post until the threat had passed. His heroic actions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
