The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit to Colonel (Infantry) Pierce Thomas Graney, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commander, Operations Group, Combat Maneuver Training Center; and Commander, 1st Brigade, 8th Infantry Division (Mechanized), V Corps, United States Army, Europe, from July 1988 to February 1992. Colonel Graney’s widely acknowledged expertise in tactical operations, his sound judgment, thoughtful leadership, and commitment to doing what is right for the unit and its soldiers produced highly motivated and well trained battalions, not only in 1st Brigade, but in every unit he evaluated at Combat Maneuver Training Center. Colonel Graney’s uncompromising commitment to excellence reflects great credit on the Officer Corps, the Pathfinder Division, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Legion of Merit to Colonel (Infantry) Pierce Thomas Graney, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States from 1 March 1984 to 28 February 1994, while serving in positions of increased responsibility, culminating as Commander, Operational Evaluation Command, Operational Test and Evaluation Command, Alexandria, Virginia. His exemplary leadership, technical expertise, dedication, and commitment to his country and the Army resulted in numerous achievements which vastly improved the evaluation and analysis of Combat Arms, Combat Support, and Combat Service Support systems. Colonel Graney’s outstanding performance reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
