The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Arnold S. Pitts (ASN: 34119394), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 27th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 25 June 1944. When ammunition vehicles had to be abandoned because of heavy enemy fire placed on them, Private Pitts, with disregard for his own safety, ran to the first vehicle and drove it to a position where the ammunition could be delivered to the troops. This action on his part allowed his platoon to keep firing at the enemy while our troops withdrew from the area.
