The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Marc L. Greer (ASN: 36448906), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 27th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 7 July 1944. While in action against the enemy and while the detail of which he was a member was hemmed in behind the enemy lines, Private Greer, with complete disregard for his own safety, swam out to amphibious tractors off shore under darkness and directed them in, so that the entire group could be removed from a highly untenable position.
