The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Eugene G. Ellsworth (ASN: 20270540), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 27th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 27 June 1944. When one of his comrades was severely wounded by enemy machine gun fire in front of the lines, Private First Class Ellsworth volunteered to go under heavy machine gun and sniper fire to the rescue of the wounded man. During this action he was able to secure valuable information as to the enemy’s disposition and fortification. Upon returning to his lines with the wounded man the information he had obtained was transmitted to higher headquarters. As a result of this information a barrage was laid on the enemy positions and his organization was able to continue its advance.
