The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade James Fairchild Brinkerhoff (ASN: 16114755), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 27th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Hinashisu, Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 23 June 1944. His fire on an enemy strongpoint from an exposed position was largely responsible for the safe withdrawal of a rescue party which had run into intense enemy fire. Later on, during the same action, he exposed himself to heavy rifle and machine gun fire for several minutes in order to reach a radio, which was then used successfully to secure timely relief.
