The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant John Clarence Nolan (ASN: 20203619), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy North of Tanapag Harbor, Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 7 July 1944. On at least three occasions Sergeant Nolan went forward of the established lines to recover wounded men. On one occasion he remained with a wounded man in front of the lines for over 30 minutes, during which time he was under constant enemy rifle fire. Sergeant Nolan’s gallant action was responsible for saving the lives of at least five American soldiers.
