The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Earl L. White (ASN: 0-383244), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 21 June 1944. During the intensive naval gunfire on the Battalion Command Post, one shell set fire to a shack used by the switchboard personnel. Captain White crawled into the burning shack amidst exploding ammunition and rescued two wire men. His conduct was an inspiration to all personnel.
