The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James R. Miller, Jr. (ASN: 0-123291), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 7th Infantry Division in the Kwajalein Campaign, 31 January 1944. Given the mission of exploring the reef on Kwajalein Island the day prior to the main assault and while still held by the enemy, Lieutenant Miller, in broad daylight, and with complete disregard for his own personal safety led a small group of Alligators close to shore. He audaciously climbed the reef, took his vehicles slowly across the beach, photographed known enemy installations, and examined the reef for small boat channels and for mines. Lieutenant Miller’s extraordinary gallantry and courage were an inspiration to the men of his command and were of inestimable value in insuring the success of the entire operation.
