The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Robert F. Cassaro, Jr., United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force near Quang Ngai, Republic of Vietnam, on 25 August 1968. As darkness fell on that date, Captain Cassaro led a flight of two F-100s to aid a friendly force that was engaging a large heavily armed and fortified hostile force. Operating under highly restricted and hazardous conditions, and without flares to aid him in the night, Captain Cassaro relentlessly and repeatedly attacked with precise accuracy through intense volleys of anti-aircraft fire. Thereby, the anti-aircraft weapons were silenced, great losses were inflicted upon the hostile force, and the hostile force was routed. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Cassaro has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
