The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Michael Samberg (ASN: 42134717), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 3 December 1944, while serving with Company I, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in Saare-Union, France. On this date, the vastly undermanned company came under attack from Germany infantry and tanks of the 11th Panzer Division. The Company Commander ordered the unit to consolidate at a central defensive position to prevent the company from being overrun, and then radioed for artillery fire around the new position. Private Samberg, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, stayed in the attic of a house adjacent to the Company Commander, and placed accurate and deadly fire on enemy infantry positions to help allow the company to consolidate. After the company had completed its consolidation, he exited the building and ran to the company defensive position while under machine gun fire from an enemy tank coming down the street. Private Samberg then turned back and entered another building where he knew a fellow Soldier was positioned, and led him out of the building to the company’s defensive position, while under machine gun fire from the enemy tank. Private Samberg’s conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, the 101st Infantry Regiment, and the United States Army.
