Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division, General Orders No. 4503 (June 10, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) John W. Levering (ASN: W-3155933), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Levering distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 7 February 1968, while serving as an Aircraft Commander of an armed helicopter of Company B, 229th Aviation Battalion (Assault Helicopter), 1st Cavalry Division, during an emergency medical evacuation mission near Hue, Republic of Vietnam. When another aircraft was downed in enemy controlled terrain, Warrant Officer Levering exposed himself to the hostile ground fire as he landed next to the downed helicopter. Disregarding his own safety, Warrant Officer Levering remained on the ground until the wounded crew members were loaded aboard the aircraft. His actions were directly responsible for saving the lives of several soldiers. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
