Department of the Air Force, Special Order No. GB-309 (August 25, 1995)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Airman Sean T. Ring, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of line near Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, on 2 March 1995. On that date, Airman Ring heard the cries of a Turkish child from a fifth floor apartment balcony of an adjacent apartment complex. Smoke was exiting the kitchen and bedroom windows. Without hesitation and with total disregard for his own safety, Airman Ring rushed to the apartment and evacuated the child to a safe location. Concerned for the safety of other occupants, Airman Ring re-entered the apartment and crawling on hands and knees, searched every room for victims of smoke inhalation. Airman Ring turned his attention to the fire only after determining the apartment was empty. Flames had engulfed the stove and overhead cabinets and were quickly spreading to the ceiling. Airman Ring’s initial attempt to smother the blaze was futile and fighting exhaustion and smoke inhalation, he had to exit the apartment. He waited only a few moments, then re-entered the apartment in another attempt to extinguish the flames. Again, his attempts thwarted, he was forced to exit the apartment. Airman Ring persevered in his humanitarian efforts and for a fourth time re-entered the apartment and fought the blaze until he succeeded in extinguishing the fire. His action saved the life of a child and eliminated a possible catastrophic fire that could have injured or killed several individuals in the apartment complex. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Airman Ring reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
