The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Bobby Laverne Benedict (ASN: US-55428608), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Benedict distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 20 November 1968, while serving as a rifleman with Company B, 1st Battalion (Airmobile, 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division, during a combat mission in Tay Ninh Province, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large enemy force, Specialist Benedict exposed himself to the intense hostile fire as he moved to a forward fighting position to place accurate suppressive fire on the enemy positions. After expending all his ammunition, he ran forward to aid the wounded soldiers. With complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Benedict carried three casualties across an open area to the rear where they could be treated. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
