The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lance Corporal David Michael Patrick Bryant (MCSN: 2206916), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an 81-mm. Mortar Forward Observer with the Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the morning of 1 October 1967, a Marine in an observation post in the northwest sector of the Con Thien defenses detected an enemy force attempting to breach defensive wire 400 meters west of his position. He immediately reported the situation to his commander and requested that illumination rounds be fired over the area. When the flares ignited, the defensive perimeter suddenly came under intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, recoilless rifle and mortar fire. Several recoilless rifle rounds impacted near the observation post and wounded the Marine. Upon learning that the man was seriously injured and unable to carry out his duties, Lance Corporal Bryant unhesitatingly left his position in the command post bunker and fearlessly maneuvered across fifty meters of fire-swept terrain to the observation post. Ignoring the heavy volume of hostile fire around him, he quickly evaluated the situation and, after reestablishing communications which had been disrupted, requested mortar and artillery support. With complete disregard for his own safety, he steadfastly remained in his precarious position and skillfully controlled and adjusted supporting arms fire on two separate target areas until the enemy force had been routed. Subsequently, he assisted in the evacuation of the casualties before resuming his normal duties. His bold initiative and calm presence of mind in the face of grave personal danger were an inspiration to all who observed him and contributed materially to the defeat of the enemy. By his courage, outstanding professional ability and unswerving devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Bryant upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
