The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade William Howell Woodson (NSN: 0-157862), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Dive Bomber in Bombing Squadron ONE (VB-1), attached to the U.S.S. YORKTOWN (CV-10), in action against the enemy Fleet on 20 June 1944. While operating at extreme range and in the face of strong enemy anti-aircraft fire and enemy air opposition, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Woodson participated in a determined dive bombing attack on an enemy aircraft carrier. Three direct hits and two probably hits were scored. When his fuel was exhausted he made a safe water landing at night and was rescued by a friendly destroyer. His skill and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
