The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Boatswain’s Mate First Class John R. Bruce (NSN: 3164160/199340), United States Navy, for heroic and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the YP-237 when he discovered the YP-237 burning and drifting in the direction of a mine field on 23 May 1942. In spite of the danger from exploding gasoline drums, ammunition and depth charges, Boatswain’s Mate First Class Bruce turned and proceeded at best speed and succeeded in approaching within 25 feet of the burning vessel. He then lowered a boat and, taking charge himself, entered the area which was either close to or in the mine field. By his cool courage and prompt action he was able to rescue two men and recover one body. His conduct on this occasion was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
