The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Storekeeper Third Class Paul Mueleveld, United States Navy, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving aboard the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. LEXINGTON (CV-2), on 8 May 942, during the Battle of the Coral Sea. Although suffering from severe shock as the result of a violent explosion which occurred in his compartment, Storekeeper Third Class Mueleveld rescued five disabled men who otherwise would have been trapped there.
