The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Water Tender Second Class Raymond J. Marsh, United States Navy, for heroic conduct and extreme courage at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, on the occasion of the rescue by a United States vessel of survivors of the U.S.S. YORKTOWN and the U.S.S. HAMMANN on 6 June 1942. With complete disregard for his own safety, Water Tender Second Class Marsh jumped overboard from his ship and brought two men who were unable to swim from alongside the YORKTOWN back tot heir own ship where they could be taken aboard.
