The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Storekeeper Second Class Douglas M. Moore, United States Navy, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving on board the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. LEXINGTON (CV-2), on 8 May 1942, during the Battle of the Coral Sea. Although knocked unconscious by the blast of a tremendous internal explosion aboard the U.S.S. LEXINGTON during the Battle of the Coral Sea, Storekeeper Second Class Moore returned to his station in the ammunition train and, despite dense smoke and stifling fumes, rescued seven men who had been disabled by the same detonation.
