The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Pharmacist’s Mate First Class Virgil Lewis Weeks (NSN: 2658524), United States Navy, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving as Flight Deck First Aid Corpsman on board the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. LEXINGTON (CV-2), on 8 May 1942, during the Battle of the Coral Sea. In the face of violent explosions, Pharmacist’s Mate First Class Weeks remained at his battle station, rendering first aid to the wounded, assisting in removal of the injured to safety and helping exhausted men reach life rafts over the side. One of the last to abandon the stricken aircraft carrier, he, by his professional skill and tireless endurance, undoubtedly saved the lives of many who might otherwise have perished.
