The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Rear Admiral John Lesslie Hall, Jr. (NSN: 0-8200), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as a Naval Task Force Commander during the amphibious invasion of Italy. Throughout the period of organizing, planning and executing the diverse naval and combined operations which culminated in the successful amphibious assault on the West Coast of Italy, Rear Admiral Hall brilliantly commanded a large Naval Task Force, exercising outstanding initiative and nicety of judgment. His great professional skill, resourcefulness and exemplary conduct under fire contributed immeasurably to the success of the campaign. The extraordinary ability, able leadership, and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Rear Admiral Hall reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
