The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Leland H. Treap (ASN: 35385757), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery C, 314th Field Artillery Battalion, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 16 November 1944 in France. While serving as an instrument operator with an artillery forward observer team at Chemery, France, Corporal Treap, though severely wounded, volunteered to remain on duty because his evacuation would create additional hardships for the remaining members, and continued until the objective was accomplished. Returning with prisoners, he successfully conducted them to the rear despite enemy artillery fire. Corporal Treap’s outstanding courage, perseverance, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
