Headquarters, 8th Air Force, General Orders No. 115 (July 15, 1945)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Air Corps), [then Major] Edward B. Giller (ASN: 0-659459), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving as Commander of the 343d Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group, EIGHTH Air Force, from 1 January 1945 to 7 March 1945. During this period of intense air activity, Colonel Giller’s prowess was outstanding to a degree which inspired his fellow flyers to new heights in aerial combat. Under his brilliant leadership, the Squadron contributed to the disruption of the enemy’s supply lines by destroying three-hundred and ten (310) locomotives. To alleviate the constant threat and danger of aerial attack on Allied Ground Forces, Colonel Giller concentrated his efforts against the enemy’s Air Force. As a result, in this short period his Squadron destroyed twenty-six (26) planes in the air and eighty-six (86) on the ground, six (6) of which were credited to him. In establishing this enviable record, Colonel Giller consistently displayed superior airmanship, resourcefulness, and gallantry of the highest order.
