Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 70 (March 24, 1943)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Air Corps) Frank Fort Everest (AFSN: 366A), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane and Commanding Officer of the 11th Bombardment Group (Heavy), SEVENTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the Pacific Theater of Operations, on 13 February 1943. On that date, Colonel Evans was in command of a flight of four bombers that sank a large Japanese cargo vessel. Just as the ship began to list, 45 Japanese Zeros zoomed in to attack the American bombers in a battle that lasted for 50 minutes, across 150 miles through shifting screens of enemy fighters. Colonel Everest and his pilots held formation and returned safely to home base. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Everest, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
