The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant General Paul Kendall Carlton, Sr. (ASN: 0-789133), United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States. General Carlton distinguished himself while serving in consecutive positions of great responsibility in the Strategic Air Command from 6 July 1965 to 23 September 1972, culminating as Commander, Fifteenth Air Force. During this period, General Carlton’s outstanding and forceful leadership contributed immeasurably to the deterrent mission of the Strategic Air Command, Through his exceptional management ability, inspirational leadership, and military professionalism, General Carlton materially enhanced the security of our nation and our efforts toward world peace. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of General Carlton reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
