The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal to Major General Scott Cunningham Bergren, United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States. General Bergren distinguished himself as Commander, Ogden Air Logistics Center, Hill Air Force Base, Utah, from 30 January 2000 to 31 August 2003. While in this important assignment, the absolutely brilliant leadership, foresight, and pursuit of excellence consistently demonstrated by General Bergren yielded major improvements to the effectiveness and resounding success of the Ogden Air Logistics Center. Under General Bergren’s superb leadership, the center repaired or modified over 1,200 F-16s, A-10s, and C-130s providing key assets back to the warfighter in minimum time and cost. Further, the Ogden Air Logistics Center provided unparalleled support to Joint Chiefs of Staff-directed operations NOBLE EAGLE, ENDURING FREEDOM, NORTHERN WATCH, and SOUTHERN WATCH. After the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks, he was instrumental in establishing and securing the base of munitions air bridge that delivered 3,700,000 pounds of munitions to America’s warfighters in Afghanistan in just five days. Additionally, in support of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, General Bergren oversaw the processing of over three thousand military personnel assigned to Olympic security and supported over two thousand federal agents and eight federal agencies. His efforts guaranteed the success of the Winter Games and the safety of its participants. As the leader of a key munitions management unit, General Bergren led the charge to sustain the Center’s Reserve Ammunition Teams which have saved the Air Force over one billion dollars in cost avoidance by returning critical, high priority munitions to full service. In addition, General Bergren revitalized depot maintenance quality ensuring the center grew from a 75.1 percent “in compliance” rating in 2000 for all graded areas on the Maintenance Standardization and Evaluation Program inspection to outstanding 98.4 and 96.9 percent ratings for 2001 and 2002 inspections respectively. Also, General Bergren created a cutting-edge work environment in which members of the center saved the Air Force countless millions of dollars with brilliant initiatives to include the implementation of “Lean” production techniques, the establishment of partnerships with local and national companies, as well as outright cost avoidance in depot maintenance and supply chain management. As a result of his efforts, the center garnered ten Air Force-level and dozens of Air Force Materiel Command-level awards, consistently setting the standard for all Air Logistics Centers. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of General Bergren culminate a long and distinguished career in the service of his country and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Scott Cunningham Bergren, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as an F-4 Weapons System Officer and Navigator with the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action in Southeast Asia on 27 September 1972. On that date, while acting as a Weapon Systems Officer, Lieutenant Bergren led a strike flight targeted on a vital railroad bridge connecting one of the hostile forces’ major supply lines. Despite the threat of hostile aircraft, surface-to-air missiles, and intense and accurate anti-aircraft artillery fire, Lieutenant Bergren located his primary target, swiftly determined it to be unworkable for poor weather conditions, and proceeded with his flight to his alternate target, successfully destroying it. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Lieutenant Bergren has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
