The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade David Louis Wilson, United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Dive Bomber in Bombing Squadron SIXTEEN (VB-16), attached to the U.S.S. LEXINGTON (CV-16), in action against the enemy fleet in the vicinity of the East Philippine Sea on 20 June 1944. While operating at extreme range and in the face of strong enemy anti-aircraft fire and enemy air opposition, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Wilson participated n a determined dive bombing attack on an enemy aircraft carrier. Three direct hits and two probable hits were scored. When his fuel was exhausted he made a safe water landing at night and was rescued by a friendly cruiser. His skill and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
