The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Captain George Arthur T. Washburn (NSN: 0-58272), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. LUNGA POINT (CVE-94) in action against enemy Japanese forces during the invasion of Luzon, Philippine Islands, from 3 to 18 January 1945. Exercising great skill and resourcefulness in directing the activities of his ship, Captain Washburn sent out his planes on numerous successful missions into enemy territory and, during his ship’s approach to the target area, repelled many vicious hostile air attacks, on one occasion shooting down a plane perilously close to his ship and sending it crashing into the sea. By his outstanding leadership and untiring devotion to duty throughout, Captain Washburn contributed materially to the success of this important operation and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Captain Washburn is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
