The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Charles B. Stout (NSN: 5568090), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism and conspicuous devotion to duty while serving as a Company Corpsman with the FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan and Tinian, Mariana Islands, during the period 19 June 1944 through 31 July 1944. Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Stout repeatedly treated wounded regardless of his own life and on 19 June 1944, with another Hospital Corpsman, he pulled two badly burned and two injured men from a blazing tank. On 4 July 1944, when his company and platoon met particularly heavy enemy machine gun fire he dangerously exposed himself, treated several wounded men and contributed to the saving of several lives. Again on 7 July 1944, in the face of heavy enemy machine gun fire he most capably treated several wounded men and dragged them to safety. He gave his own life while treating a wounded Marine on Tinian Island on 31 July 1944. His courage and conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
