The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Carl Daiss Mueller (NSN: 8532683), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism and conspicuous devotion to duty while serving as a Medical Corpsman with a Marine Rifle Platoon of the Second Battalion, Twenty-Ninth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, on Okinawa Shima, Ryukyu Islands. On 15 May 1945, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Mueller’s platoon was attacking a fiercely defended hill through withering enemy fire, suffering heavy casualties. During the engagement Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Mueller was severely wounded in the right arm and leg. He was unable to move, but realizing that many men were in need of medical attention, he refused evacuation and directed that the wounded be brought to him. While suffering intense pain from his own wounds, he skillfully administered first aid to all the wounded and directed their evacuation by amphibious tractors. After all the wounded had been taken care of, he was again wounded. Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Mueller’s conspicuous heroism, intrepidity and self-sacrifice saved the lives of many of the men and set an outstanding example of the devotion to duty. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
