The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lawrence Wollenberg (ASN: 37207630), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company **, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. On ** April 1943, in Tunisia, North Africa, a combat patrol of which Private First Class Wollenberg was a member became marooned deep in enemy territory. Their withdrawal was cut off by enemy mortar, machine gun and rifle fire. With utter disregard for his personal safety, Private Wollenberg went through that fire with a message for our own machine guns and mortars to concentrate their fire on the enemy position, thus giving cover fire to our patrol. Without Private Wollenberg’s courage and determination to carry out this mission, our whole patrol might have been lost. Private First Class Wollenberg’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
