Headquarters, 7th Armored Division, General Orders No. 72 (May 2, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] Charlie Whitehead, Jr. (ASN: 34499509), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Military Police Platoon, 7th Armored Division, in action in the area of Samree, Belgium, on 22 December 1944. As our troops fought to slow the enemy’s armored spearheads during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, Private First Class Whitehead repeatedly braved death to control the flow of traffic. He remained at his post at an intersection near Samree, Belgium, even when under direct sniper fire. Only when all vehicles in the area had moved back did Private First Class Whitehead leave his hazardous position. On reporting to Division headquarters Private First Class Whitehead was assigned to a vital intersection on the main route of movement. Although subjected to direct artillery and small arms fire he resolutely continued to direct traffic. Private First Class Whitehead’s courageous devotion to duty during a time of fierce combat reflects the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
