The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Corporal Abner Peeler Allen, United States Army, for gallantry as Color Bearer in the assault on Fort Gregg on 2 April 1865, while serving with Company K, 39th Illinois Infantry.
