Headquarters, 7th Armored Division, General Orders No. 88 (November 18, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Joseph L. Vitulli (ASN: 32227434), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Military Police Platoon, 7th Armored Division, in action in the area of Mars-La-Tour, France, from 15 September 1944 to 19 September 1944. Moving his squad of Military Police into position at critical points along the route of approach to the bridgehead at the Moselle River, Sergeant Vitulli maintained constant control of the heavy traffic flowing across the span into battle. Despite constant artillery bombardment, he remained at his post directing the vehicles and men of both our own and an infantry division. When a barrage caught a column of soldiers, he unhesitatingly went to the aid of the wounded and by his courageous efforts removed many of them to a nearby building where they could be treated and evacuated. Sergeant Vitulli’s performance of his hazardous duties during the fiercely-contested river crossing operations are in keeping with the high traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
