The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Michael Tutin (ASN: 32065786), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company **, ** Battalion, ** Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. On the night of ** April 1943, while operating with a voluntary combat patrol, northeast of ****, Tunisia, Private Tutin’s squad encountered a squad of German Infantrymen. As his squad engaged the enemy from the front, he used his own initiative and maneuvered into position on the enemy left flank, despite machine gun and mortar fire, and accurately tossed three hand grenades which resulted in killing one German and dislodging the other enemy positions. Throughout the entire campaign, his aggressiveness and fearless conduct steadily forced the enemy back and inspired his comrades to increasing efforts until the enemy was completely routed. Private First Class Tutin’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
