The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Alfred F. Turner (ASN: 37065660), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Company A, 63d Infantry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division, in action in the Philippine Islands on 27 January 1945. Private Turner volunteered to move forward in advance of his squad during an attack on an enemy-held hill in order to deliver automatic rifle fire upon an enemy strong point. After destroying the position, he continued to cover advancing riflemen until their objective had been gained and the wounded evacuated. Later, when forward elements of his unit were brought again under direct automatic fire, he fired his automatic rifle from an exposed position in order that his unit might destroy the enemy emplacement. While performing this outstanding act of courage and loyalty, he was killed by enemy machine gun fire. Private First Class Turner’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
