The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Francis J. Travers (ASN: 32160968), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Company *, ** Ranger Battalion, in action on ** July **, 1943, three miles northwest of ***, Sicily. On that date, an enemy strong point manned by about fifteen men was holding up the advance of the company and the establishment of a beachhead. Private First Class Travers, by his quick resourceful execution of orders, and despite several serious wounds, was mainly responsible for the reduction of the hostile strong point. His initiative and courage under fire were an inspiration to his fellow soldiers and were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
