The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Howard C. Tizzard, Jr. (ASN: 12080709), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 7th Armored Division, in action in Belgium, on 21 December 1944. With complete disregard for danger, Staff Sergeant Tizzard moved boldly in advance of our forces to knock out an enemy machinegun located on the flank of the platoon. Together with another soldier, he assaulted the German positions with hand grenades and succeeded in disorganizing the hostile forces. His swift and courageous actions, made possible our advance across a waist-deep stream to a more tenable defense lines. Staff Sergeant Tizzard’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 7th Armored Division, and the United States Army.
