War Department, General Orders No. 104 (September 13, 1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Cavalry) Frederick F. Thomas (ASN: 0-345006), United States Army, for gallantry in action on Luzon, Philippine Islands, while assigned to the 13th Infantry Regiment, Philippine Army. At Urdanetta, in December 1941, Captain Thomas displayed remarkable courage leading his battalion in the defense of the approaches of the tactically important Carmen Bridge. When his untrained troops disintegrated before vastly superior forces, he saved the remnants of his command by swimming across the treacherous Agno River. Again at Betis, Pampanga, on 4 January 1942, Captain Thomas was able, by outstanding leadership and gallantry, to extricate the remnants of his personnel after his position had been overrun. Captain Thomas’ gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
