The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Charles L. Stimmel (ASN: 20711362), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 164th Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on 23 November 1942. On that date, the route of approach to the injured men was over a ridge in full view of the enemy and under heavy machine-gun fire. Private Stimmel courageously risked his life to crawl over the exposed ridge three times, successfully evacuating a wounded comrade under fire on each trip. He was mortally wounded during a mortar barrage while administering aid to one of the men he had rescued. Private Stimmel’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
