The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James V. Smyth (ASN: 31035352), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 164th Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on 21 November 1942. Participating in an assault on the enemy’s line Private Smyth suffered a head wound from hostile rifle fire. The bullet pierced his helmet and scalp causing shock, pain and great discomfort. Although he could have returned to the rear for immediate treatment and rest, Private First Class Smyth chose to remain in the field of action with his comrades where every man was badly needed. Thus, by his bravery and tenacity of purpose this soldier contributed immeasurably in bolstering the morale of his fellow soldier in a trying situation. Private First Class Smyth’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
