The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Sergeant Charles Norman Shay (ASN: 31308724), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of the Medical Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 March 1951, near Kumo-ri, Korea, Sergeant Shay was selected as a member of a medical litter team going to the aid of wounded men of Company L. Although the shortest route led through a village which was under intense enemy mortar fire and was heavily mined, Sergeant Shay, with complete disregard for his own safety, moved with the unit through the mine-infested area to the wounded men. After assisting in the administering of first aid, he helped to place them on litters and returned with the group across the hazardous terrain to safety. Sergeant Shay’s heroic and selfless actions reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
