The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] Irving Schwartz (ASN: 32902257), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 18 February 1945, in the vicinity of Bliesbrucken, Germany. During the infiltrating action of the enemy, Private First Class Schwartz, at the head of the avenue of approach, immediately brought fire upon them. His action located points of fire for the rest of the men and he assisted in keeping them informed of the enemy’s movements. He exposed himself from time to time to enemy fire by standing in his foxhole in an endeavor to bring more effective fire on the enemy and to call for them to surrender. As a result of his courage and initiative, forty-six enemy surrendered. Private First Class Schwartz’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 65th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
