Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 158 (July 2, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Arthur L. E. Schumacher (ASN: 0-1289493), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Company F, 376th Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division, in action in Germany, on 23 – 24 March 1945. While leading his company in an advance through the suburbs of Ludwigshafen, Germany, Lieutenant Schumacher constantly exposed himself to direct, intense enemy rifle, machine gun and artillery fire and by his personal example of heroic leadership inspired his men to close with and destroy the enemy. At different times using a pistol, rifle and rocket-launcher he fearlessly advanced on strongly defended enemy positions and gun emplacements and silenced these defenses by his skilful, daring actions. Lieutenant Schumacher’s bold aggressiveness and unswerving devotion to duty exemplify the finest traditions of the armed forces.
