The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] Ronald C. Sager (ASN: 39542117), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division in the Philippine Islands. Sergeant Sager’s platoon was ordered to eliminate an enemy machine gun position at Mount Pacawagan on 30 April 1945. As the unit moved into position to attack, the platoon leader and platoon sergeant were wounded. Sergeant Sager immediately assumed command, reorganized the platoon and launched the assault. He moved around to the rear of the emplacement, and under covering fire from his men courageously crawled to the opening of the pillbox and threw three hand grenades amidst the enemy inside. Upon detonation of the grenades he darted into the positions and disposed of the survivors with his rifle. Four Japanese soldiers were killed and the emplacement taken personally by Sergeant Sager. His actions, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service, reflecting great credit on himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
