The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James W. Roberts, Jr. (ASN: 0-1316331), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 11th Airborne Division, in action against the enemy on Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 28 March 1945. On that date, the enemy launched a determined attack on the perimeter defense of a guerrilla unit of which First Lieutenant Roberts was advisor. The attack achieved initial success and a group of enemy soldiers succeeded in penetrating the perimeter. Despite the fact that he had previously been wounded by enemy mortar fire, First Lieutenant Roberts made his way to an abandoned machine gun and poured heavy fire into the enemy. As a result of this officer’s heroic action the attack was repulsed and numerous casualties were inflicted on the enemy. The daring courage, fortitude, and zealous devotion to duty displayed by First Lieutenant Roberts reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
